Khoisan mythology: Cagn, the mantis and the first tales
10 spirits documented in the Kunda Codex
The San and Khoikhoi of Southern Africa carry some of humanity's oldest oral traditions. Their world was created in the first dreamtime, when animals were people: Cagn, the trickster mantis, shapes the moon and the sacred eland. The rock art of the Drakensberg depicts the shamans' trance journeys. The entries below document these founding figures with sources.
