Dji is one of the vodun cited in the mythology of the Fon of the south of present-day Benin, the old kingdom of Dahomey. He figures in the surveys of the pantheon among the many children born of the creator couple Mawu-Lisa, those powers to whom the primordial dyad entrusted the different domains of the world — fire, water, metal, animals and other natural forces. His name thus appears in the lists of the deities born of Mawu-Lisa, beside figures such as Gu, Loko or Ayaba. Beyond this mention, Dji remains a very little documented deity, whose precise domain and associated narratives are not clearly established by the available sources. Caution is required, for the attributions vary from one compilation to another. The great rainbow deity of the Fon world is traditionally the cosmic serpent Aido Hwedo, known in the Afro-Atlantic diaspora under the name Ayida Wedo.
