Adroa is the supreme Being of the Lugbara, a people living on the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. He presents himself under two complementary aspects. Adroa, god of the sky, transcendent, distant and good, is the creator. Adro, god of the earth, close to humans, is associated with danger and death. Adro is described as tall, white, possessing only half a body and hopping on a single leg. Usually invisible, he haunts the rivers and shows himself to those who approach death. According to tradition, Adroa created the first man, Gborogboro, and the first woman, Meme, twin ancestors of the Lugbara, and founded the social order by handing down his laws. Some versions see in Adro not the evil double of Adroa but a class of earthly spirits, refractions of his good aspect.
