The name Kaiwan, also transcribed Kaïwan, Kêwân, Kiyyun or Chiun, is attested as the Semitic designation of the divinised planet Saturn. It appears in the biblical book of Amos, chapter 5, verse 26, where the prophet reproaches Israel for having carried Sakkuth, its king, and Kaiwan, its star god. The term derives from the Akkadian name of Saturn, Kayamanu, the constant one, transmitted in Aramaic in the form Kewan. In the Acts of the Apostles, the same astral deity is called Remphan. Kaiwan thus belongs to the astral cults of the ancient Near East, Mesopotamian and Semitic, and not to an African goddess. No Ethiopian deity of the earth and of abundance bearing this name is documented in the sources consulted. The attribution to an Ethiopian pantheon and to a function of fertility therefore appears uncertain, and probably born of a confusion of homonymy.
