Papa Legba is the lwa of the crossroads, the doors and the roads in Haitian Vodou. Keeper of the barrier that separates the world of humans from that of the spirits, he is saluted first in every ceremony: without his consent, no other lwa can pass. The formula "Papa Legba, ouvri baryè a" (Papa Legba, open the barrier) opens the Vodou services. He descends from the vodun Legba of Dahomey, present-day Benin, messenger of the gods and interpreter between the worlds among the Fon. Honoured in the Rada rite, he appears as an old man leaning on a cane or a crutch, wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat, smoking a pipe, accompanied by a dog — the animal consecrated to him. His vèvè figures a crossroads adorned with a cane. He is offered black coffee, tobacco, rum and sweets. Catholic imagery associated him with Saint Peter, who holds the keys of paradise, as well as with Saint Lazarus and Saint Anthony. In the Petro rite, his counterpart is Mèt Kalfou, master of the crossroads of the night. His figure is found again in Elegua in Cuban Santería and Exu in Brazil, and the crossroads legend of American blues echoes him — a sign of the depth of his imprint on the cultures of the diaspora.
