Baron Samdi is the lwa of death in Haitian Vodou and the head of the Gede family, the spirits of the dead, whose cult developed fully in Haiti. Master of the cemeteries, he is associated with the first grave of every cemetery, marked with a cross that bears his name, the cross of Baron. Husband of Maman Brigitte, he welcomes the souls of the dead and watches over their passage to the other world. He is represented in an undertaker's black suit, top hat, dark glasses often missing one lens, with cotton in his nostrils like the dead prepared for burial. His colours are black, purple and white. He is offered rum infused with chilli, black coffee, tobacco and cigars. His vèvè joins the cross and the coffin. He is honoured at the Fèt Gede, on the first and second of November, the great festival of the dead in Haiti. A powerful healer, he is invoked for the sick in danger, for no one dies without his consent. His crude humour and his laughter disarm the fear of death. Cinema made him world-famous, often by caricaturing him, whereas he remains a living and respected religious figure of the Haitian people.
