The Lusca is a sea monster of Caribbean folklore, associated with the blue holes, those deep underwater chasms near the island of Andros, in the Bahamas. Its name is said to be a contraction of Mollusca, the phylum of the cephalopods, in reference to its tentacles. The accounts describe it as a giant octopus, sometimes half octopus, half shark, reaching outsized dimensions — up to several dozen metres according to the testimonies. Fishermen and divers attribute to it violent currents, lost equipment and attacks in the blue holes, as well as in certain inland pools connected to the sea. No known species reaches such dimensions, and the Lusca belongs to cryptozoology and to local oral tradition. The most measured explanation sees in it a large octopus amplified by the telling.
