Kontron, associated with his companion or alter ego Sanin, also called Sanène, is an ancestral figure of the donso, or dozo, hunters' brotherhoods of the Manding and Bambara world, present from Mali to Burkina Faso and as far as the Gold Coast. Oral tradition makes him a mythic ancestor of the hunters, keeper of the secrets of the bush and a model of purity and chastity, his name being linked to the idea of the purity of gold. Kontron and Sanin belong to no particular clan and are invoked in the initiation rites that make the donso a man of knowledge — hunting being here a path of learning as much as a practice. Versions diverge on their exact bond, some presenting them as two brothers or inseparable companions. Kontron is thus less a god than a tutelary patron and a moral model of the hunters' societies.
