Among the Nguni peoples of southern Africa — Zulu and Xhosa in particular — the amadlozi, singular idlozi, designate the spirits of the departed ancestors. Regarded not as dead but as living in the world of the ancestors, they watch over their descendants and serve as intermediaries between the living and the divine. They are credited with influence over the family's fertility, health, fortune and misfortune. The bond with them is maintained through rituals of gratitude, libations and animal sacrifices — ox, goat or fowl — the pledge of balance and protection. An idlozi may also pass on a gift of healing to a descendant called to become a healer, the sangoma. The ritual hearth, the umsamo, is the spiritual centre where these presences are honoured. Despite the spread of Christianity, the veneration of the amadlozi remains vigorous in southern Africa, often woven together with Christian faith. The term translates roughly as spirits or shades of the departed.
