Achimi is a figure of Kabyle mythology, among the Berbers of Algeria. He is the son of the primordial buffalo Itherther and of the heifer Thamuatz. According to the narrative collected notably by the ethnographer Leo Frobenius, an ant advises young Achimi to choose between safety among humans and wild freedom. He first chooses freedom and unites with his mother and his sister to beget a herd of buffalo. After years of hunger and cold endured by the herd, he returns to the ant's advice and leads the buffalo to live among humans. With his father, Achimi is thus associated with the development of hunting, of meat-eating and of herding. The myth preserves elements of the old Berber beliefs prior to the Arab conquest.
