Amani is the Nubian and Meroitic form of the name of the god Amun. In Nubia and in the kingdom of Kush, the name of Amun was pronounced Amane or Amani, and the god remained there a major national deity. His clergy, at Napata and at Meroe, wielded considerable authority, going so far as to designate the sovereigns by oracle. The element Amani appears in many Kushite royal names, such as Tanwetamani, Arkamani, Amanishakheto, Amanirenas or Amanitore — these last two being kandakes, queens of Meroe. To present Amani as a queen-goddess is therefore imprecise. It is first of all the god Amun in his Nubian form, whose theophoric name binds power to the sacred and honours kingship, including feminine kingship, in the titularies of the kandakes.
