Apedemak is a lion god of Nubian and Kushite religion, venerated mainly in the Meroitic period, from the third century before our era. He is most often represented with a man's torso and a lion's head, sometimes with a serpent's body topped by a leonine head, and even in a three-headed, four-armed form at the temple of Naqa. God of war and victory, he is also bound to agricultural fecundity and to the legitimation of royal power. A properly Nubian deity, without equivalent in the Egyptian pantheon, he held a central place in the south of the kingdom of Kush, notably in the Butana region. His principal temples stood at Musawwarat es-Sufra, built under king Arnekhamani, at Naqa, under Natakamani and Amanitore, and at Meroe, where his importance rivalled that of the god Amun.
