ABASSI
allyGod
Abassi (also Abasi) is the creator god and sky deity of the Efik, as well as of the Ibibio and Annang of southern Nigeria. In the Efik narrative on the origin of death, Abassi shaped the first human couple but feared that humans would end by equalling the gods. At the insistence of his wife Atai, he allowed the couple to settle on Earth on two conditions: not to farm and not to procreate, and to return to share his meals at the sound of his bell. When the humans transgressed these prohibitions by working and multiplying, Abassi grew anxious at seeing his fears realised. It was then Atai who settled the conflict by sending death among humankind, so that they would not surpass the gods. Abassi thus holds the place of the distant creator whose will frames the human condition.
