Sakarabru is an entity of the Agni (Anyi) pantheon, in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, associated with justice, medicine and punishment. Of an ambivalent nature, feared as a dark power but also invoked to heal and to render justice, a link is attributed to it with the renewal of the moon and the change of the seasons. Certain sources say it originated in a village before its wider integration into the Agni religion. The entity remains little documented in the accessible scholarly works.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sakarabru a god or a demon?

Both qualifications circulate. It is an ambivalent entity, feared as a dark power but also invoked for healing and justice, which makes it difficult to classify.

To which people does Sakarabru belong?

To the Agni (Anyi), Akan populations of Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. Certain sources say it was first venerated locally before a wider adoption.

What is known with certainty?

Little. The accessible scholarly documentation is thin, and the essential comes from generalist collections of mythology, which invites caution as to the details.
