Sa is, with Alatangana, one of the two creator deities of the Kono of Guinea. In the Kono myth, before creation reigned darkness, in which lived Sa, his wife and his daughter, the only existents. By his magical power, Sa fashions an endless sea of mud and builds his dwelling there. The god Alatangana visits him, judges this dark and dirty place uninhabitable, then solidifies the mud to make of it the Earth and peoples it with plants and animals. Alatangana marries Sa's daughter against the latter's will and engenders humanity. In return, Sa obtains the right to call back to himself, whenever he wishes, any of Alatangana's children: this is why humans are mortal. Sa is thus closely bound to death and to the primordial chaos. The entity is handed down above all through the narrative of Alatangana.
