Nyikang, sometimes written Nyikango, is the heroic founder of the Shilluk kingdom, on the White Nile, in present-day South Sudan. Tradition makes him the first reth, the first king, a semi-legendary figure situated around the sixteenth century. He holds a central place in Shilluk sacred kingship. An intermediary between the creator Juok, also called Jwok, and men, he is reputed to inhabit each king, so that every reth who ascends the throne is supposed to be possessed by his spirit. The narratives lend him an origin bound to the Nile, a birth sometimes attached to a being of the waters, and a migration from a land without death, Duwat, which he leaves after a succession conflict. His epithets evoke the sky, the cloud and a struggle with the sun, illustrated by the myth in which he hurls an adze towards the star. He remains a foundation of Shilluk identity and cohesion.
