Juok, also spelt Jwok, is a Nilotic term designating supernatural power and, among the Shilluk of South Sudan, the supreme creator god. The word is shared by several peoples of the upper Nile valley, including the Dinka and the Nuer, who likewise see in it an omnipresent creator. Among others, such as the Acholi and the Lango, the related term Jok designates rather local or ancestral spirits. Juok is conceived as formless, invisible and present everywhere at once, master of the destinies of all living beings. One may address him with sacrifices of cattle, goats or sheep. Among the Shilluk, the legendary king Nyikang serves as the privileged intermediary between humans and Juok.
