Iruva is the name given, in the western regions of Kilimanjaro, notably Machame and Masama, to the supreme god of the Chaga of Tanzania, called elsewhere Ruwa. The word means sun in the Chaga language, and the deity is associated with the day star, residing in the sky. Iruva, or Ruwa, is not first seen as the creator of humanity but as a sustainer of the world, dispenser of life, judge of destinies and liberator, reputed merciful towards those who invoke him. Sacrifices were traditionally offered to him at noon, at the zenith. This cult precedes the arrival of Christianity and Islam on Kilimanjaro in the nineteenth century. The name is also found among neighbouring groups related to the Chaga.
