Akonadi, also written Akonedi or Akonnedi, is an oracle goddess of justice venerated in Ghana. Her principal sanctuary stands at Larteh Kubease, on the Akwapim ridge, some fifty kilometres north of Accra, in Guan and Akan country. For generations this place has stood as a spiritual tribunal: those who believe themselves wronged, deceived or falsely accused come to consult the goddess, who speaks through the mouths of her priestesses in trance, delivers oracles, unmasks the guilty and prescribes reparations and purifications. The sanctuary also heals: plants, ritual baths and divination there accompany the sick and families in difficulty. Her most famous servant, Nana Akua Oparebea, high priestess from 1957, trained hundreds of priests and priestesses and carried the cult of Akonadi as far as the United States, where African-American communities in search of their Akan roots founded affiliated shrines. Goddess of truth, clear sight and law, Akonadi embodies a justice that does not separate the tribunal from the temple: to speak the truth, repair the wrong and restore the community's balance are for her one and the same act.
