Nzambi a Mpungu, also written Nzambi Mpungu or Nzambi Ampungu, is the supreme god of traditional Kongo religion, among the Bakongo and the Teke of Central Africa (DR Congo, Congo, Angola). Celestial father, often associated with the sun, he is the creator of the world and the source of life, of the cosmos and of the moral order. Kongo cosmology binds him to the kalunga, principle of energy and boundary between the world of the living (Nseke) and that of the spirits (Mpemba). A distant god, he is said to have withdrawn after the creation, leaving human affairs to the lesser spirits, the bakisi. He does not answer prayers in a direct, personal way, remaining the very condition of existence rather than an actor in daily life. His feminine counterpart is Nzambici, bound to the moon and the earth.
