In the Serer religion of Senegambia, Koox, also written Kooh, is the name borne by the supreme being and creator among the populations of the Cangin languages, where other Serer groups say Roog. Several sources indeed link the name Roog to that of Koox. The intermediaries between this supreme being and the living are not Koox himself but the Pangool — singular Fangool. These spirits of ancestors and ancient saints intercede with the divine, protect their descendants and pass on the vital energy. They are distinguished according to the paternal and the maternal line, and are invoked by the priests called saltigues, for the supreme being is not prayed to directly.
