The Ilomba, of which Ilombo is a graphic variant, is a familiar serpent of the Lozi folklore of western Zambia. Fashioned by a sorcerer from nail clippings and blood taken from the forehead, the back and the chest, mixed with powerful plants, it often bears the human face of its master. Created to strike enemies, the Ilomba then demands blood and victims, and turns against the one who summoned it if it ceases to be fed. It shares the life of its creator to the point that wounding or killing it amounts to wounding or killing the sorcerer himself. Its victims believe they see the sorcerer's face rather than a reptile. This creature belongs to the beliefs surrounding witchcraft rather than to a pantheon of deities, and its memory is handed down above all through oral tradition and popular Zambian narratives.
