Huveane, also called Huve or Huwe, is a figure of the Pedi and Venda mythologies of southern Africa, sometimes attached to the Basotho and Bavenda. He there holds two roles often united: that of creator god and that of trickster. As creator, certain versions say he shaped a child modelled in clay, or was even the first human being on earth. A very widespread myth tells of his departure from the world of humans: wearied by the noise of life, he reaches the sky by raising steps that he withdraws behind him so that none can follow. His reputation as a prankster comes from episodes in which he plays tricks on his father and his circle, for example by stealing his food. According to the regions and the narratives, his profile wavers between a distant high deity and a cunning hero, which makes his image composite.
