Dibobia is the primordial spider of the mythology of the Fang, a people spread across Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon. Suspended on her web between the sky and the original waters, she is the sole companion of the creator god Mebege, also named Nzame or Mbere, at the dawn of the world. It is Dibobia who, observing their solitude, suggests to Mebege that he create the earth. On this advice, the god shapes an egg from hairs of his arm, a part of his brain and a smooth stone, then Dibobia lays the egg in the waters. From its breaking is born the original triad, including Zame ye Mebege, his sister Nyingwan Mebege and the brother Nlona Mebege. A figure of ingenuity and counsel, the spider plays the role of catalyst of creation rather than of creator herself.
